Anyway, get AVG antivirus and spybot search%26destroy as antispyware. The reason I am recommending these because both can run in safe mode and from boot cd(something like BartPE).

Many others have already given you many list but no one said the key thing. How to clean?

Install those software and do update.

Method-1: First disconnect your internet connection(physically unplug wires). Then run spyware scanner first. Then antivirus. Then restart pc. Now I recommend run disk clean up: either use windows disk cleanup tool or get ccleaner(www.ccleaner.com). Clean all junk. Reconnect internet.

Method-2(better option): Unplug internet. start computer in safemode. Run antivirus first and then antispyware. restart computer in normal mode.

Method-3(best option when all above can't clean infection): Unplug internet. Make some boot security disk like bartPE. http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ .

Now, boot from that cd and run antivirus and antispyware. it will clean to the root.

Hope you understand the importance of these steps.

Just as recommendation: After you clean infection, install a good firewall like zonealarm and use safe browser like opera(www.opera.com).

I have been a fan of Norton/Symantec since 1996. I followed blindly until 2004 when I finally had enough of the junk and headaches that followed. I used everything from the single stand alone version all the way up to the Enterprise Edition. Since 1999, not much has changed with their service. They added some bells and whistles, yet it does not keep up with what is happening. And they continue to charge more and more. I haven't figured that out yet.

Avast is a great product at a great price (FREE) for home use.

I found AVG useless in deleting viruses. Mcafee is ok. I recommend Norton Anti virus, in combination with YAHOO TOOL BAR that provides pop-up blocker and anti-spy scanner.

First of all I want to inform you of what i have learned on the internet on a forum about spyware and they told me on that forum that avg is not good at all that is is a form of spyware...just wanted to make you aware of that fact. I don't know about free but despite what people may say, do NOT go with Norton. Link is in my source as to why you shouldn't use them. You might have to google free virus protection but if you want the best, you might have to pay.
All Anti-Virus programs in the U.S. use the European Standardization. This makes them the same as far as the basic program is concerned. The difference in how effective the program is, is the definition updates for new virus's. Remember, a virus must start infecting before the companies can detect it and then evaluate it. Then they need to write an update and put it on your computer before it can protect you from them.

Avast produces a fantastic free home edition that is a complete suite for virus protection, e.g. Internet, PC, Mail, etc. It auto updates and provides a very effective shield against virtually any virus threat known today. In addition, it provides a lot of choices for scans, scheduling scan, etc. It's free...check out the link below for more information about the program and to download it for free :)

AVG is also a good product, but of the two, Avast is superior from my experience having used both...both in functionality and detection of threats. However, you need a good spyware/ malware detection program to compliment either Avast or AVG. If you do not already have one..then definitely check out Spybot Search and destroy--excellent program.

try opening the registry(be careful)

in the run window type regedit or regedit.exe.

now u'll see a window

open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

u'll find a tab called avast or grisoft(avg)

delete that and exit now restart ur comp

now try to go to the add or remove programs..if that doesn't happen delete all the program files of avg and avast in program files folder ...

Yes, you do need a firewall (*). Depending on your level of experience, I would suggest the Zone Alarm Free Firewall if you are rather inexperienced, or the Comodo Firewall Pro if you are more experienced.

You did not mention the name of the product that claimed to find a gazillion errors and now wants you to buy it to fix them, but I suggest that you disregard and get rid of it.

Get CCleaner to clean your registry for fee (it is in the ''issues'' area). Also TuneUp Utilities 2008 has a 30 day trial and is a good registry cleaner.

Zone Alarm has a free firewall too, but if you have XP, the Windows firewall will probably do.
Uninstall that and install the free AVG anti virus control center. It can get rid of any errors. Also if you want to have a firewall, install mozilla firefox.

Sunshine is right on the money. My AVG had a problem and would not go away. I reinstalled it and then removed it. Another option is to go to Help and Support and restore your computer to the date before you installed AVG. Good Luck

I personally only use clamav. Have for years, and never caught anything. Best thing about it, it only has 1 process running in task manager which equals more system resources for other real-time scanners you may be using . Automatically, and quietly scans all emails, and very thorough virus scanner in general.

AVG Free Antivirus and Limewire?

Hello all, I have a new laptop on which I've downloaded AVG free antivirus. A teen ager cousin of mine downloaded Limewire (free) on my laptop and used it a few times. Last night, AVG found a dozen threats (Trojan Horses). Thankfully it also fixed those threats (moved 1 to its archive and deleted the rest of the files).

My question is this - could I still have viruses on my machine that AVG didn't pick up? Is there anyway to find and fix them as well?

I'm going to uninstall Limewire right away.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. You can't download the free version of AVG anti virus a second time.They consider it a one time deal only.I seriously doubt that ,even if you contacted the company and explained to them how you accidentally deleted the program ,they'd still let you have a free download a second time.

For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir庐 PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than most ''paid-for'' anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. Uses less then 10 MB RAM on my machine. I am a computer tech, and if someone doesn't have A/V protection, I give them a product called AVG anti-virus. Now it is not as strong as Norton, MacAfee, etc, but you get what you pay for....any protection is better than none....usually.

I am very interested in these answers because I have the same problem BUT gents who have already answered. AVG is no longer free!! Starting on 2/18 whoever is on a free program will either have to upgrade or end their program. Using those Anti-virus programs from free site is just to get a virus. None of them to my knowledge are of any real use; all they do is give you a false since of protection.

So many times I have heard people say ''well I had an AV program, what happened?'' in each and every case that I heard of where the virus got through an anti-virus program the programs were either freeware or MacAfee. Below is an excellent program. A couple bucks up front can save a couple hundred for a repair down the road.

AVG and Avast are both good, and both free. However, AVG is free only for one computer, even at home, and they now have functionality in their product that detects if it is installed on more than 1 computer in the same location. Avast allows unlimited home use - for that reason, I prefer Avast.

The best antivirus software (that you have to pay for) is in my opinion two different ones:

Kaspersky- Extremely Secure AV, but really HD intensive excellent choice for desktops

Eset Nod32- Very Low Memory Usage this is HUGE when it comes to a laptop or other mobile device where you might not have the memory to spare like a desktop.

Free AV: Definitely a fan of the open source ClamWin for windows and Clam for Linux, also I like avast but it had trouble getting rid of a couple Trojans that I took care of with bit defender but the problem is windows still says you don't have any anti virus with all the free ones except AVG which as they mentioned is leaving mid January. I am a technology professional and have access to all kinds of high powered corporate security software. Most of it is just expensive crap so I personally use Free AVG by Grisoft:

It works, it's not a system hog, and best of all, it's FREE! I have used it for years and have never had any virus or spyware attacks.

The best way to avoid security intrusions of any kind is to use Firefox or Netscape browsers and eMail instead of Microsoft Internet Explorer and Outlook. I used Netscape exclusively for years but have recently discovered Firefox and LOVE it. Both are much more functional than IE and much safer.
