I have AVG Free and sometimes I feel it may show it found a virus for the sake of showing some activity during scanning PC. But maybe I'm wrong. Is there a way to check it out? Do you know of an infected file I could download and scan it to see?

Antivirus programs do NOT show a virus for the sake of showing activity. If you are receiving virus alerts with so,me frequency, it's likely you a) have a spyware infection that is periodically reinfecting your system with viruses, or b) are download suspect files from unreliable sources.
If you really want to test this, you can install limewire, then download programs labelled "keygen" from that network. Do NOT run the keygen programs - that will infect your system. You can safely scan these programs for viruses without risking infecting your system.
